MAG-16

  • Da Nang 9 Mar 1965 taking over existing units (included FWAC until Jul 1965)1
  • Aug 1965 had two UH-34D HMM at Da Nang, one UH-34D HMM at Phu Bai, and one UH-1E VMO at Da Nang
  • By Dec 1966 one UH-34D and two CH-46A HMM at Da Nang, one UH-34D HMM at Phu Bai, and one UH-1E VMO at Da Nang
  • Phu Bai unit went to new MAG-36 in Oct 1967. By the end of 1967 the group had one UH-34D and one CH-46A HMM and one CH-53A HMH along with the UH-1E VMO. Another CH-46A HMM joined ca Jan 1968. In Mar 1968 the VMO began conversion to OV-10A and UH-1E (would eventually be all OV-10A) and new UH-1E HML activated.
  • By Jan 1969 had one UH-1E HML, three CH-46 HMM and one CH-53A HMH along with one VMO. One CH-46 HMM left in Jul 1969. The AH-1G HML squadron came to it in Nov 1969. That same month it took over two CH-46 HMM squadrons at Phu Bai, but they soon moved to Da Nang.
  • In Jan 1970, the group had one UH-1E HML, one AH-1G HML, four CH-46 HMM, two, and the VMO.
  • It was drawn down during 1971, and by Apr 1971 it had one UH-1E HML, one AH-1G HML, two CH-46 HMM and one CH-53A HMH. Active operations ceased May 1971 and all units were gone by Jun 1971.

MAG-36

  • Established 2 Sep 1965 at Chu Lai, with two UH-34D HMM and one UH-1E VMO squadrons there and an additional UH-34D HMM squadron at Qui Nhon.
  • By Dec 1966 it had two CH-46A HMM and the UH-1E VMO at Chu Lai, and one UH-34D HMM (still at Qui Nhon?). A second UH-1E VMO was added 29 Dec 1966.
  • In Oct 1967 the group relocated to Phu Bai. That Dec it had two squadrons each VH-46A and UH-34D and the two VMO squadrons with UH-1E. In Jan 1968 it moved one VMO and two UH-34D (one of them new) to Quang Tri. The three squadrons at Quang Tri went to new MAG-39 15 Mar 1968 and VMO-3 was redesignated HML-367.
  • In Jan 1969 the group had one CH-53A HMH, two CH-46 MMH and one HML (which gradually converted from UH-1E to AH-1G during the year). The group shut down Nov 1969 and left RVN.

MAG-392

  • Established 15 Mar 1968 at Quang Tri, taking over two UH-34D HMM and one VMO from MAG-16. One UH-34D squadron was replaced by CH-46D in May 1968 and both were UH-46D by Jan 1969. VMO-6 left RVN Oct 1969 and group HQ closed down by end of Dec 1969.

  • HML-367 UH-1E Formed 15 Mar 1968 Phu Bai from VMO-3 (MAG-36); converted to AH-1G during 1969; to MAG- 16 Nov 1969 and Da Nang; left RVN with group May-Jun 1971
  • HMM-161 UH-34D Phu Bai by Aug 1965 (MAG-16); Qui Nhon by Sep 1965 (MAG-36); gone by Dec 1965
