Clss14a1_3.gif (122 bytes) Total Strength = 15,781 personnel (slightly over 50% of this total is comprised of personnel in the divisional base) consisting of 1167 officers, 670 warrant officers and 13944 enlisted men. The large number of WO's is due to the large complement of aviators within the division.

 

The Divisional base comprised the following :    HQ and HQ Company, MP Company, Engineer Battalion, Signals Battalion, Air Cavalry Squadron, Divisional Artillery, Support Command, 3 x Brigade HQ and HQ Company's (1 Airborne and 2 Airmobile), Aviation Group.

The division was actually only authorised 8 battalion, three of them airborne, but in Vietnam a ninth battalion was authorised so that each brigade had 3 maneuver elements. In the 1st Cav. Division (Airmobile) the battalions were called 'Squadrons'.

NOTES:

Due to the fact that troops from the Airmobile Division could be rapidly and repeatedly deployed as a rapid response force to most emergency situations, the attrition rate amongst combat personnel was high. As a result of this the Division was invariably well below authorised establishment.
